Real anthracite mine and a 1927 steam train in Ashland, then Mount Carmel for lunch. Seasonal. Confirm before you commit the miles.
Operating day in season, often warmer months. Fall weekends if posted. Mine morning, Mount Carmel lunch after. Doing Pioneer and Ricketts the same day. Assuming weekday September hours without calling. Dress shoes in a mine.

Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train
Ride into a real anthracite drift mine plus a Vulcan steam train. Classic half-day since 1962. Seasonal roughly April through October. Plan on 10:00am–1:00pm.
Sunshine Grill
Independent breakfast and grill. Smoothies with fruit from the Mount Carmel Farmers Market. Opened 2025. Plan on 1:25pm–2:15pm. Ashland to Mount Carmel about 10-15 minutes.
Vine Street Sandwich Shop
Mom-and-pop for about forty years. Subs, cheesesteaks, pizza. Classic Mount Carmel lunch hang. Plan on 2:25pm–3:00pm. Downtown Mount Carmel hop. Use as backup if Sunshine is slammed or closed.
